By Patricia F. Weisberg

On March 2, 2010, Congress extended the eligibility period for the COBRA subsidy for an additional month, through March 31, 2010. The maximum time period for receiving the subsidy remains at 15 months.

  • The subsidy is now available to those who involuntarily lose their jobs through March 31, 2010. The prior legislation extended the subsidy through February 28, 2010.
  • The subsidy is available for 15 months.

As before, only employees who have been involuntarily terminated from employment will be eligible for the subsidy. In addition, as before, the subsidy is not available for qualified beneficiaries who become eligible for coverage under another "group" health plan or Medicare.
