Tax Controversies

Overview

Tax litigation and controversy broadly describe the practice of resolving tax disputes with federal, state, local and foreign tax authorities. A tax controversy may involve a business (whether for-profit or not-for-profit), trust, estate or individual and can result from any form of taxation, including income tax, estate and gift tax, state sales and use tax, and local property tax. In general, tax disputes are separated into civil and criminal matters. Regardless of the nature or scope of the dispute, Walter | Haverfield has the experience to provide effective representation.

Our tax attorneys have a thorough understanding of IRS procedure, a working knowledge of substantive tax areas, and the skill to advocate a position before the IRS or, if necessary, in court. We have negotiated favorable resolutions at all levels within the IRS and successfully represented clients in litigation before the federal district courts and even the U.S. Tax Court. Indeed, it is our relationships with the IRS, state department of revenue auditors, appeals officers and counsel, combined with our capabilities, that allow us to obtain the best possible results for our clients in the most efficient fashion.
