Since their enactment, Ohio’s Sunshine Laws have been a continuing source of inquiry and litigation for boards of education — and the advent of new technologies has added further compliance challenges. Our Sunshine Laws Insight
The much-publicized 2016 Ohio Supreme court ruling that school board members who decide a school-related matter “in a series of e-mail exchanges” can be found in violation of the Sunshine Laws (ORC 121-22) has led the evolution of how technology impacts daily board activities. Our attorneys routinely assist districts throughout the state of Ohio with Sunshine Laws surrounding technology including:
- Text messages
- Google Docs
- Social media
- Video conferencing
We also routinely assist districts with responses to requests for public records. While these requests can be voluminous and time-consuming, we use the latest technology software to make the task of producing required records less challenging.
